Choose a screensaver

Your Mac comes with several screen savers that display photos, messages, artwork from your Apple Music library or photo library and more.

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, then click Desktop & Screen Saver.
  2. Click the Screen Saver tab. Screen savers appear on left side of the window, and a preview of the selected screen saver appears on the right.
  3. Click a screen saver to select it. To see a full-screen preview, move your pointer over the preview, then click the Preview button that appears within.

To create a slideshow screen saver, select one of the slideshow options on the left, such as Floating, Reflections, Origami or Shifting Tiles. Then use the Source pop-up menu to choose your own photos or one of the built-in slideshow collections.

Choose when and how the screen saver will start

Use the “Start after” pop-up menu to choose how long your Mac needs to be inactive for before the screensaver starts. If you don’t want a screen saver to start, choose Never.

The Hot Corners button gives you options to start or stop the screensaver or put your display to sleep by moving your pointer to one of the corners of the screen. Choose an option from the pop-up menu that corresponds to a specific corner.

Require a password after the screensaver has started

You can set your Mac to require your login password to unlock the screen after the screen saver starts:

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click Security & Privacy.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Select the option to require password after sleep or screen saver begins.

Turn off your display or put it to sleep

Your Mac uses its processor, graphics chip and display when it displays a screensaver. To save energy, you can use Energy Saver preferences to choose how long your Mac needs to be inactive before the display turns off or goes to sleep.

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click Energy Saver.
  2. Use the slider to set the amount of inactivity. If you set your display to turn off before the screensaver starts, the screensaver won't start after a period of inactivity.

If you're using a notebook computer, such as a MacBook Pro, you can set different times based on whether you're using your battery or are plugged in.

After installing, setting up and checking out over 50 Mac Screen Savers (!!!), we’ve narrowed our “best of” list down to our favorite 7. Each of them has been tested to ensure they work in the latest version of OS X (El Capitan, 10.11). They are all free and rather unique from each other.

RipEditBurn Plus is a totally integrated sound editor. Record everything from streaming audio to classic LPs. Create custom iPod-ready playlists for iTunes. Download blaze audio ripeditburn for mac.

Play classic Nintendo games from within your screen saver! This one is so awesome we wrote an entire guide on how to install and set up UberNES (link will open in a new tab/window).

You can “jump” right into games and play them from where they left off in the screen saver. Or start from the beginning.

Download: UberNES

This one is a replica of your iPhone’s “Lock Screen”. It displays the time and a (slow) moving background image, in addition to the ‘Slide to Unlock’ bar that we’re all so familiar with. As it happens, we have a whole bunch of the iOS 9 Wallpapers and Lock Screen images for you to download and use to make this screen saver even more realistic.

You can customize the screen saver in quite a few ways, from changing the wallpaper to formatting the time and text.

Skyrocket is remarkably hypnotizing. It’s a never-ending “fireworks show” that takes place in a football field. Th3 mac torrent software. Imagine yourself on a flying-carpet, zooming through a fireworks-filled night sky.

Download: Skyrocket

The name pretty much sums it up. Your monitor(s) will turn into giant “Apple Watch” clocks, which actually look pretty cool, especially when displayed on a large screen in a shared area.

If you like Apple’s built in screen saver “Flurry” – Flux is for you. Flurry was my go-to screen saver for years – until I discovered Flux. It’s more colorful and has a whole slew of Options you can tinker with.

Download: Flux

Euphoria is one of those “fractal/geometric” screen savers. With a whole bunch of presets and the ability to customize everything, it’s my favorite of that type.

Download: Euphoria

This one has amazing possibilities if you’re willing to do some research and a bit of trial-and-error testing. In a nutshell, Webview allows you to view webpages, including “live updating” sites, as your screen saver. Visit the Webview’s home page for a list of sites and URLs that work really well with Webview. It’s easy to customize and add your own web sites. My favorite way of utilizing Webview is to use this URL:
